EMR, brief history

Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) has been introduced in 2000 for research development in complex electromechanical drives especially drives systems. EMR is based on action reaction principle, which organizes the system model as interconnected subsystems according to the integral causality. An inversion of this description leads to macro-control blocks. EMR pictograms are developed in various sofwares to facilitate its usage (MATLAB-Simulink, AMESIM, PSIM, TYPHOON HiL, etc.).

Summer schools are regularly organized to show the help provided by EMR for the control development of complex systems in all physical domains, particularly in the field of electrified systems (electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, trains, etc.). These summer schools started since 2006 in Lille (France, 2006), then, Harbin (China, 2008), Trois-Rivières (Canada, 2009), Lausanne (Switzerland, 2011), Madrid (Spain, 2012), Lille (France, 2013), Coimbra (Portugal, 2014), Lille (France, 2015), Montréal (Canada, 2016), Lille (France, 2017), and Hanoi (Vietnam, 2018). The last EMR summer school EMR'19 Took place in june 2019, Lille (France). These Summer School are dedicated to Master and PhD students, engineers and scientists, from both academia and industry, which have to model and control new multi-physical systems such as industrial multi-drive systems, traction and propulsion systems, hybrid electric vehicles, or renewable energy generation systems.

EMR users in academia or industry

Since its development, EMR is used by numerous acdemic researchers and industry engineers. In the research and academic field, EMR is used in Canada by the Univeristy of Sherbrook and the University of Quebec Trois-Riviere, in China by the Harbin Institute of Technology and the University of Hong-Kong, in Vietnam by the Hanoi University of Science & Technology, in Swizerland by the University of Applied Sience of Valais-Wallis and also the CERN laboratory, in the UK by the University of Nottingham, in Portugal by the INES Combria, in Spain by the University of Oviedo, in Belgium by the University of Ghent, and in France by the University of Belfort, the IFSTTAR-LTE laboratory, the University of Toulouse, the SATIE laboratory, the LAPLACE laboratory and the L2EP in the Univesrity of Lille, etc. In the industry, EMR is used by ALSTOM, SIEMENS, SNCF, PSA, VALEO, RENAULT, Sherpa Engineering, TYPHOON, etc.

EMR in european projects

EMR is also used in the european PANDA project (see flyer). This projetc is based on the EMR formalism to organize all the simulation models ( This project is coordinated by Prof. Alain Bouscayrol (University of Lille).
